Julian Gavin

Julian graduated from the University of Melbourne. He undertook postgraduate studies in conducting at the Victorian College of the Arts before moving to London to study at the National Opera Studio.

Julian made his UK debut as Don Alvaro in La forza del destino for English National Opera. His subsequent performances for the company include the roles of Alfredo Germont in La traviata, Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Rodolfo in La bohème, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Manrico in Il trovatore, Don José in Carmen and the title roles in The Tales of Hoffmann and Ernani. Other engagements include the roles of Laca in Jen?fa and Carlo VII in Giovanna d’Arco (for Opera North and in Frankfurt), the title role in Don Carlos (at the Royal Opera House, the 1998 Edinburgh Festival, for Minnesota Opera, New Israeli Opera and Opera North), Pollione in Norma (in Lucerne and for Michigan Opera), Alfredo Germont in La traviata (for Den Norske Oper and Washington National Opera), Rodolfo in La bohème (in Trieste and Stuttgart, for De Vlaamse Opera and Opera North), Rodolfo in Luisa Miller (in Essen and at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux), Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (for Deutsche Oper Berlin and Opera North), Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut (for New Israeli Opera), the title role in The Tales of Hoffmann (for Washington National Opera, Vienna State Opera and Opera North), Cavaradossi in Tosca (for Opera Colorado), Don José in Carmen (for Vienna State Opera, Opera Colorado, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, at the Zurich Opera House and at Teatro Real in Madrid), the title role in Andrea Chénier (for the Chelsea Opera Group and in Essen and Liège), Des Grieux in Manon (for Opera North), Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West (for New Israeli Opera), Jenik in The Bartered Bride (for Glyndebourne Festival Opera), Gustavus in Un ballo in maschera and Paolo in Francesca da Rimini (for Boston Lyric Opera and in Bordeaux) and Avito in L’amore dei tre re (for Opera Holland Park).


Julian’s Australian engagements include the roles of Governor, Vanderdendur, Ragotski and Captain in Candide, Prince in Rusalka, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Florestan in Fidelio, Eric and Steersman in The Flying Dutchman, Alfredo Germont in La traviata, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette, Don José in Carmen, Des Grieux in Manon and Gustavus in Un ballo in maschera (for Opera Australia), the title role in Andrea Chénier and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (for Opera Queensland), Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and Calaf in Turandot (for State Opera of South Australia) and the title role in The Damnation of Faust (for Victorian Opera).


Upcoming engagements include the roles of Cavaradossi in Tosca (for Opera Queensland), Don José in Carmen (for Opera Australia), Manrico in Il trovatore (for Opéra de Montréal) and the title role in Andrea Chénier (for the Bregenz Festival). Julian’s recordings include Ernani, Carmen and Don Carlos (Chandos).


Engagements in 2011 include the roles of Dick Johnson in The Girl of the Golden West and Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, both for Opera Queensland.
