1. General Auditions

Opera Queensland General Auditions for principal, minor principal and understudy roles are held once a year. In 2008 auditions will be held at the Lyric Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

Auditionees are required to have prepared:

  • Two arias, at least one of which must be in a language other than English.
  • A single page resume and recent photograph.

An Opera Queensland accompanist will be in attendance at every audition. Auditionees who elect to use our accompanist are required to provide copies of their music, clearly marked up and in the key in which they will be singing. Music in plastic display books and unbound sheets are not acceptable. Auditionees wishing to rehearse with the official accompanist may do so by private arrangement as there will be no run through on audition day. Accompanist details will be available two weeks prior to the audition date. Auditionees may bring their own accompanist to be registered on the Audition Form.

Applications for General Auditions will be accepted from February 2008.
Applications must be received no later than
6 May 2008.

2. Chorus Auditions

Opera Queensland Chorus Auditions are held once a year.
In 2008 auditions will be held at the Opera Queensland Studio, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU).

Candidates wishing to audition for chorus places please note: the Opera Queensland chorus operates on a seasonal basis. Chorus rehearsal/production periods generally fall between late February and late October.

3. Young Artist Program Auditions

Young Artist Program auditions are held annually during Opera Queensland's General Audition period.

For 2009, applicants for the Young Artist Program are required to submit the following material:

Young Artist Program applications must include:

  • a CD or audio tape containing a recent, clear recording of reasonable (not necessarily professional) quality with three contrasting arias. Of these three arias, one must be sung in Italian (as original language), one in English (translation or original) and one in either French or German (both as original language).
  • Repetiteurs please note: A recording is not required. Applicants selected to audition will be contacted by the Head of Music to arrange an interview and audition time.

  • A detailed CV containing:
    - relevant education and career information.
    - a comprehensive repertoire list of roles, ensembles and solo pieces (operatic, classical vocal and music theatre) both performed and studied.
    - the names and contact details of two referees drawn from one or more of the following: voice teacher, vocal coach, Head of Vocal Department, Chorus Master, language coach, stage director
    - a recent photograph

Short-listed applicants will be contacted in April 2008 to finalise an audition time.

Short-listed applicants will be required on the same day to undertake a vocal stage audition for which they will have prepared five arias, a short interview with the panel and a 20-30 minute coaching session with either the Head of Music or an Opera Queensland representative.

Applications, together with accompanying material, must be received no later than Monday, 31 March 2008.

Should all available positions not be filled, further auditions may be held at the discretion of Opera Queensland. Should this be the case, any late applications will be considered then.

Important: Owing to immigration restrictions, it is difficult for Opera Queensland to accept applications from artists for this Program who are not permanent Australian residents.

Important: If you are wanting tp participate in the General Auditions and/or Chorus Auditions as well, please complete the General Audition and/or Chorus Audition Form.

Important: Results of the Young Artist Program audition will not be announced until September 2008.

The 2009 Developing Artist Program is open to artists resident in Brisbane between March and October 2009. These positions will be offered to suitable candidates from the General and Young Artist Program Auditions who will be notified at the same time as Young Artist Program candidates.
